This alteration results in a surge of pleasurable chemicals into the brain, which can cause physical dependence as the brain begins to rely on this chemical reaction. Percocet is a synthetic opioid narcotic painkiller composed of oxycodone and acetaminophen that is often prescribed for pain management. Psychological dependence develops as an individual comes to rely upon Percocet to help boost mood, reduce stress, and eliminate negative emotions. The oxycodone (the same narcotic found in OxyContin) in Percocet acts on the central nervous system to alter the body’s perception of pain. However, because Percocet is a narcotic, some individuals develop an addiction to it. Many people have successfully used Percocet to manage pain for short-term durations in precisely the manner in which their doctor prescribed it and suffered no ill-effects.
