The higher strengths of this drug (more than 40 milligrams per tablet) should be used only if you have been regularly taking moderate to large amounts of narcotic pain medication. These strengths may cause overdose (even death) if taken by a person who has not been regularly taking narcotic medication.

Oxycontin is available as a generic drug named oxycodone hydrochloride. The most frequent minor side effects of Oxycontin include gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms of constipation, nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, and vomiting, and other symptoms including somnolence.
Gastrointestinal disorders: abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, gastritis.
Nervous system disorders: somnolence, hypoesthesia, lethargy, paresthesia.
Renal and urinary disorders: dysuria, hematuria, polyuria, urinary retention.
In addition to the events listed above, the following have also been reported, potentially due to the swelling and hydrogelling property of the tablet: choking, gagging, regurgitation, tablets stuck in the throat and difficulty swallowing the tablet.
