Edwin Hernandez, 48, was arrested this morning on charges of possession and distribution of the narcotic painkiller, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman’s Newark office said in a press release.

According to the complaint, a coworker in November saw Hernandez, a manufacturing operator at the plant, scooping large amounts of the 30 mg oxycodone pills into a quart-sized plastic bag.

NEWARK — An Irvington man who worked a pharmaceutical production facility in Elizabeth that makes oxycodone pills allegedly stole more than 8,591 of the prescription pills while on the job and intended to sell them, according to a complaint filed last week by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

Hernandez appeared in federal court Newark and is being held pending a bond hearing Wednesday.

The coworker alerted the plant’s security officers, who then searched Hernandez's locker where they found a backpack containing two quart-sized plastic bags full of the pills. Investigators put the street value of the pills at between $170,000 and $250,000, according to a press release from Fishman’s office. Follow @starledger.
