Because of its controlled-release properties, each OxyContin tablet contains a large quantity of oxycodone, which allows patients to take their drug less often. OxyContin is made to slowly release the potent opioid oxycodone to treat patients who require a continuous, around-the-clock opioid analgesic for management of their moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time. However, people intent on abusing the previous formulation have been able to release high levels of oxycodone all at once, which can result in a fatal overdose and contributes to high rates of OxyContin abuse.
Recently, a physician was arrested in Nassau County, Long Island, NY for selling some several million dollars worth of controlled substances.
Some chronic pain patients, particularly in Florida, are finding it difficult to fill their oxycodone prescriptions at their local pharmacies.
Amy Pavuk, a reporter with the Orlando Sentinal, spoke with Paul Doering, a professor at the University of Florida's College of Pharmacy. He told her that when pharmacists can't or are not comfortable filling a prescription, they take the path of least resistance. "They will simply wash their hands of the situation by saying 'I'm sorry, we don't have this,' Doering said, “Whether you do or don't have it, will never know.".
Get to know your pharmacist and let him/her get to know you. This is often easier to do with a small, privay-owned pharmacy rather than a big chain pharmacy.
Be honest about your medical and prescription history.

This CCENDU alert (link is external) advises that counterfeit oxycodone (e.g., OxyContin) pills containing fentanyl have become increasingly.
This CCENDU alert advises that counterfeit oxycodone (e.g., OxyContin) pills containing fentanyl have become increasingly available in several Canadian communities. The presence of fentanyl in these counterfeit pills increases the risk of overdose among people using them. Following verification with Health Canada’s Drug Analysis Service (DAS), laboratory tests of seized counterfeit oxycodone tablets (different brands, sizes and colours) were found to contain fentanyl 89% of the time. Much less frequently, tablets contained alprazolam or ketamine as the active ingredient. Note that DAS only analyzes a subset of the substances seized by law enforcement agencies, which would also be a subset of the substances found on the illicit market.
Given the presence of fentanyl and other drugs in these counterfeit pills, individuals who believe they are using oxycodone are at greater risk of an accidental overdose. Please distribute this alert to those working with drug-using populations and those who are the first to respond to overdoses (e.g., paramedics, emergency departments).
