The most common opioids are opium, morphine, heroin, codeine, methadone, oxycodone, fentanyl, and buprenorphine. People also abuse prescription pain medications such as Oxycontin and Vicodin. For short-acting opioids such as heroin, withdrawal symptoms begin within 6-12 hours.

Opioid withdrawal occurs after the cessation (or significant reduction) of heavy and prolonged use. The speed and severity of withdrawal largely depend on the half-life of the drug. The half-life of a drug refers to how quickly your body can clear the drug from your system. Drugs that remain in your system a long time have a long half-life. These are called long-acting drugs. Drugs are cleared fairly quickly have a short half-life. These drugs are called short-acting drugs. For short-acting opioids such as heroin, withdrawal symptoms begin within 6-12 hours after the last dose and last for 5-7 days.

More than three decades’ worth of research and clinical studies document the safety of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) when used as part of an appropriate addiction recovery program. The ONDCP Fact Sheet referenced earlier also includes the following statements regarding the safety of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT):

In the United States, roughly 980,000 people are addicted to opiates such as heroin, Oxycontin and morphine.

To accomplish this goal – and to provide more options both for opiate-addicted individuals and the healthcare providers who treat them with methadone-assisted protocols) — the DHSS released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that contained the following guidance:

During the past 30 years, many opiate addiction recovery programs have had great success with a medication called methadone, which has helped tens of thousands of formerly addicted men and women overcome the addiction to opiates such as heroin, Oxycontin (oxycodone) and Vicodin (hydrocodone).

Methadone is a synthetic opiate that mimics the effect that heroin, morphine and other opiates have on certain receptors in the brain.

The common drug tests that say opiates test for heroin and morphine. Standard five panel drug test usually only look for Morphine derivatives, so Oxycodone will not show up. No, oxycontin does not show up for opiates on drug tests, because it is not an opiate, its an opioid.
